In a vertical laminar flow hood, HEPA- or ULPA-filtered Class 100/ISO 5 air is forced from the top of the enclosure straight down to the work surface for applications that are nonhazardous to the user but require a clean work environment. Sterile, contaminant-free work areas are necessary in fields such as microbiology, forensics, and electronics inspection.
Options for vertical laminar clean benches include pivoting glass sashes for safety, chemical-resistant and static-neutralizing materials, and baffling technology for more uniform air flow and lower noise. Common widths of freestanding vertical laminar flow hoods range from 2 to 6 ft; economical portable units are also available. Compared to horizontal units, vertical clean benches can offer lower energy consumption through the use of motorized impellers, as well as reduced air flow turbulence.
